Meet Robert Dean Director of On-Premise Sales, Tennessee Crown Distributing
Robert Dean brings more than three decades of experience to the hospitality and beverage industry, with a career rooted in Memphis and a lasting impact across West Tennessee. As Director of On-Premise Sales at Tennessee Crown Distributing, he leads a team responsible for supporting bars and restaurants throughout the region.
Tell us about your role and time in the industry. I serve as Director of On-Premise Sales at Tennessee Crown Distributing, leading a team of 10 responsible for all bar and restaurant accounts across West Tennessee. I joined the company as a Key Account Manager and was promoted to my current role within a year.
I’ve been in the industry for over 35 years. After graduating from University of Tennessee at Martin, I moved to Memphis and got my start at Mt. Moriah Liquors. From there, I worked with The Victory Robilio Company before being recruited by E. & J. Gallo for their wholesaler training program in Miami. After a brief break farming with family in Clarksdale, Mississippi, I returned to the wholesale wine and spirits business with United Liquor Corporation. Through acquisitions and growth, that path ultimately became Tennessee Crown—where I’ve spent the last 28+ years.
“Memphis is still a culinary gem that much of the country doesn’t fully understand.”
What drew you to the hospitality and beverage industry? It started with an early appreciation for wine during my time at Mt. Moriah Liquors. Mentors and colleagues along the way deepened that interest and helped shape my path in the industry.
What does being named MRA Associate Member of the Year mean to you? It’s an honor. It represents appreciation for the years of hard work and dedication I’ve given to this industry and this market.
What makes the Memphis restaurant community special? Memphis is different—in the best way. It’s unique, deeply rooted in culture, and still a culinary gem that much of the country doesn’t fully understand.
How have you seen the industry evolve—and where is it headed? There was a time when people said, “customers will drink in good times and bad.” That’s no longer a given. Movements like “better-for-you” and “California sober” are real shifts, and they’re reshaping our business. The industry is adapting every day, and the future will depend on how well we continue to evolve alongside changing consumer habits.
“Treat your partners’ businesses like your own. When you help them succeed and build something sustainable, everyone wins.”
What’s one piece of advice for building strong partnerships? Treat your partners’ businesses like your own. When you help them succeed and build something sustainable, everyone wins.
What’s a career accomplishment you’re especially proud of? Watching people grow. Seeing members of my team develop, succeed, and build their own careers is incredibly rewarding—and something I’m proud of every day.
What do you enjoy outside of work? Spending time with my wife, Kristi, of 25 years as empty nesters. I also enjoy duck and turkey hunting, fishing, mountain biking, and watching our kids grow and thrive.
